How to read Alaska's business license file

Issue date vs renew date, and what a physical address tells you up here.

What the file shows

Each license has a business name, physical address, community, issue date, renew date and owner. Alaska doesn't publish a trade or category with it, so our categories come from the business name, and most are just “Business”.

Issue date, tested

We checked whether renewals reset the issue date. They don't: of 10,447 licenses renewed since October 1, none had an issue date in that window, and 9,813 had an issue date before 2026. So a recent issue date means a new license.

Sole proprietors

Alaska licenses almost every business, so many holders work from home or travel, and some are out-of-area operators. Use the address to judge.
